About Ladakh
Little Tibet — where the land is ancient and the sky is close
Ladakh, once called Little Tibet, is unlike anywhere else in India. Situated at an average altitude of 3,500 metres, it is a high-altitude cold desert ringed by the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges. The landscape is stark, otherworldly, and breathtaking — eroded mountains in ochre and purple, narrow valleys carved by rivers, monasteries perched on impossible ridges.
The culture here is Tibetan Buddhist in every dimension — the gompa bells, the prayer flags, the monks in crimson robes, the butter lamps, the masked Cham dances at festival time. Leh's old city bazaar and the Leh Palace offer a concentrated dose of this heritage. But Ladakh is most fully experienced on the road — to Pangong, to Nubra, to Tso Moriri, and across the passes.
For wildlife enthusiasts, Ladakh offers some of the world's rarest encounters — the Snow Leopard, the Tibetan Wolf, the Asiatic Ibex, and hundreds of migratory bird species. Geranos Getaways builds Ladakh itineraries for every kind of traveller — from the first-time visitor to the deep explorer.
What awaits you
Three extraordinary Ladakh experiences
Each one worth the journey alone.
1
Khardung La Pass
At 18,380 feet, one of the world's highest motor-able roads. The half-day drive from Leh offers breathtaking views over the Karakoram range into the Nubra Valley. The road to Nubra — famous for its Bactrian camels, sand dunes, and Diskit Monastery — crosses Khardung La in conditions that feel genuinely other-worldly.
2
Pangong Lake
The most photographed lake in India — 134 km long, 60% in Tibet. Pangong's water changes colour from deep turquoise to cobalt blue to silver depending on angle and light. Made internationally famous by Three Idiots, it is best experienced at dawn when the surface is still and the surrounding mountains are reflected perfectly. Camp on the shore overnight for the starscape.
3
Thiksey Monastery
Perched on a hilltop 19 km from Leh, Thiksey is one of Ladakh's most impressive gompa — 12 floors, 10 temples, monks' quarters, and a 15-metre Maitreya Buddha statue. Its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa has earned it the name Little Lhasa. Morning puja at 6:30 AM, when the monks chant and light butter lamps, is not to be missed.
